Until now, the implementation of the fair and equitable sharing of gains, though stipulated in the Convention on Biodiversity and the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources, is largely inadequate.
The rewards resulting from the use of genetic resources are not going to the countries they came from. Moreover, patents continue to be applied for on resources or knowledge emanating from southern countries. Biopiracy remains common, as shown by several flagrant cases revealed by Public Eye. Through its investigative work and advocacy, Public Eye emphasises the need to act rapidly to remedy these abuses.
