Urgent appeal to Nestlé: coffee producers demand fair pay

Harvest time is approaching in the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico, and the farmers still do not know whether Nestlé will pay them a price for their coffee that is enough to live on.

Zurich, Lausanne, 7 October 2024

Since January, farmers growing Robusta coffee for Nescafé in the Soconusco region have been protesting for fair pay. The Swiss food giant – which sells their coffee under the slogan ‘responsibly sourced’ – pays such low prices that the farmers often cannot even cover their production costs.

So far, Nestlé has not responded to the modest demands of the coffee farmers. Now the next harvest is approaching, and it threatens to be very poor due to a drastic lack of rainfall this year. Coffee farmer Julio César Castillo is making an urgent appeal to the company, which  makes billions in profits from coffee sales every year. Nestlé must finally keep its promises and pay fair prices!

Following the publication of this video, and after months of pointing this out to Nestlé, the company has finally removed the false claim that the conflict in Chiapas was resolved to everyone's satisfaction in February from all its websites.
